Invitations

Unique paperless invitations are a great idea to keep your party “green”!  My Punchbowl offers free, creative invites for the March holiday!

Décor

Green votives

Wheatgrass is a clean, fresh centerpiece idea for any table as well as an arrangement of succulents.

Blarney Stone

Find a big rock (or make one out of papier-mâché). Position the stone near the front door, perhaps on your entry table, so people can kiss it when they enter.

**Legend has it that kissing the Blarney Stone will give you the gift of eloquence and persuasion!

Food

Hot Spinach and Artichoke Dip

Throw together a delicious and easy spinach and artichoke dip! Cut up baby spinach; add artichokes and artichoke hearts that have been drained and throw in a few sundried tomatoes (if you like them).  Mix the vegetables with mayonnaise and transfer to a nice baking dish or casserole dish that you could serve from the oven to your table.  Add your favorite cheeses: mozzarella, swiss and cheddar work very well! Add some cheese on top and some Parmesan to the top to create a layer of cheese that will be a nice crust, when cooked. Bake it at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes or until the cheese has browned.  (Cooking times will vary).

Irish Grilled Cheese

Mash 4 tablespoons softened butter with 2 tablespoons each of chopped parsleyscallions and chives. Spread the mixture on 4 slices white bread; top each piece of bread with sliced Irish cheddar cheese and bread-and-butter pickles. Cover with 4 more bread slices. Spread plain butter on the outside of the sandwiches and fry in a skillet until golden on both sides. Spread the remaining herb butter on the warm sandwiches. Slice into quarters, then press the cut sides in more chopped herbs for a nice presentation.

*Other traditional Patty’s Day food includes: Spinach and Pesto Ravioli, Corned Beef and Cabbage, and Shepherd’s Pie

Valentine's Day

Whether you’re attached or single, Valentine’s Day should be celebrated with the one or ones you love.

Party Ideas

Single Awareness Party – Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love.  It is a day that is typically about “romance”, however, if you are single, you can still celebrate “Valentines Day” with those you love.  For a “fun” night, invite your closest friends and tell them to bring another friend of the opposite sex, that they would not date.  Either have ingredients ready at your home so all the guests can prepare and cook together or order in from your favorite local restaurant. You can create specialty martinis, cocktails and spritzers and put out lots of chocolates in dishes around your home. This get together is so much fun.  Who knows it might become your annual get together.  Don’t be surprised when some of your friends get dates from your party, as well. Cupid?

Host a RED Party – Why not host a party on Valentine’s Day where everyone has to be “RED”!  Ask your guests to join you and bring a red dish, with at least one red ingredient.  Ideas for some red food are: red pepper soup (see below recipe), red pepper dip (available at Bristol Farms and Whole Foods markets), lasagna and/or pasta in a red sauce, red velvet cake and a chocolate bag filled with mousse and topped with red berries: strawberries, raspberries and/or cherries (see below recipe).  For drinks, we suggest: Valentinis (see below recipe), Cosmos, Champagne or Prosecco with Pomegranate Juice or Chambord and Cranberry vodka cocktails. Also, you can assign someone to bring a red floral arrangement to add to your red décor! Get your creative juices flowing.  Don’t forget all your guests must wear RED!

Sweet Love Potions

Valentinis

  • 2 ¼ c.       Currant Vodka
  • 1 ¼ c.       Champagne
  • ¾ c.          Raspberry Schnapps
  • ¼ c.          Lime juice

Directions:

  • Add the currant flavored vodka, raspberry schnapps, and lime juice to a pitcher half-filled with cracked ice.  Stir briskly to combine and to chill.
  • Add 1 1/4 cups of Champagne, and stir lightly to preserve the bubbles.
  • Strain into chilled cocktail glasses and garnish with a slice of lime or a twist.

Love Décor

Carnations are known as the “corsage” flower but are inexpensive and can be striking when arranged in a fun way.  We suggest a pave arrangement in a low crystal or solid white vase with red carnations arranged tightly creating a solid pave look.  You can create a few of these arrangements, varying in size and height, and group them together on your table as one centerpiece or place the different sized arrangements around your home.  Red votives are another inexpensive way to add romantic touches.

This centerpiece idea brings fun and flair to the table!  Don’t be afraid to mix different flowers (roses, dahlias, mums, ranunculus).   It’s a less expensive option than all red roses and a way to add texture and pizzazz to your table.  Solid white vases really make the colors pop!

Red Music

For a modern set of love tunes, the Valentine’s Day movie soundtrack is available February 9, 2010.  Our favorite songs off the album are Amy Winehouse’s “Cupid” and “The Way You Look Tonight” by Maroon 5!

Do Your Children Want to Spread Their Love Too?

Chocolate dipped pretzels and Valentine’s Day sprinkles make for simple, homemade gifts for your children, their friends and yours friends too!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup White chocolate chips
  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Wax paper

Directions:

  • Melt the milk chocolate chips
  • Dip each pretzel rod about 2/3 of the way up in chocolate
  • Melt the white chocolate chips
  • Lay on wax paper lined baking sheets
  • Allow to set a little, but not completely dry
  • Dip a fork in the white chocolate and drizzle over the milk chocolate pretzels
  • Decorate with Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Lay back on wax paper to set completely

Wrap in plastic bags and tie with a nostalgic Sweethearts candy-inspired card or red ribbon.

“The Art of the Schmooze”: Relationship Building at its Best!

In January, Sarah had the opportunity and pleasure of speaking at this year’s Special Event Show in New Orleans.  Audrey Gordon of Audrey Gordon Parties in Chicago invited Sarah to speak at her annual seminar.  This year’s topic was “The Art of the Schmooze”: Relationship Building at its Best!”  Sarah spoke with Ken Kristoffersen from Experiential Events in Calgary, Nick Gentile from A.O.O. Events in Los Angeles and an all-star panel including Michael Cerbelli (Total Entertainment) and Richard Carbotti (Perfect Surroundings). The dynamic team delivered the true definition of “schmooze” provided tips from a personal and event standpoint.

Below are some of Sarah’s top tips.

- Have Confidence

-Small talk leads to interesting conversation

-Remember small details

-Ask questions

-Listen

-Remember peoples’ names

-Make eye contact

-Be well informed so you can speak on many topics

-Be personable

-Be sincere

-Be genuine

-Be open minded

-Engage someone in their expertise to gain knowledge and interest

The art of being a good schmoozer is knowing when the right time is to get involved in the conversation and when to listen.

How do people, who are shy and/or not comfortable with a group of people they do not know, start a conversation:

-Need to have a genuine interest in people

-Be friendly

-Be present (don’t join a conversation and have a wandering eye)

-Don't talk about yourself as it is not interesting and you already know about yourself

-Ask questions (people love to talk about themselves)

-Ask a question about one’s profession (how did you come to
choose this profession?).  With a new couple - how did you two meet?  Try not to ask mechanical questions or appear mechanical ... Show/have a genuine interest in who you are speaking with

-Try to roll play with friends or practice in front of a mirror prior to going into a room of people you do not know

-Confidence – Schmoozing once and being successful builds one’s confidence - experience a successful “shmoozefest” and you are on your way to becoming a natural schmoozer

-Practice the art of relaxation (i.e. deep breathing)

How to start a conversation?

*Depends on the environment…

-Initiation

-Introduction - common ground

-Relate

-Having a wingman can make an easier introduction with a schmoozing team

Holiday Ideas

Throwing a quick holiday get together with friends and family? Below are some tips on how to throw a great soiree on a budget.

Music Sets The Tone.

Infuse your party with a true mix of the holiday classics from Bing, Dean, Frank, Ella, Count, Louie as well as some wonderful lounge remixes of these artists which will deliver very cool, eclectic and funk flavored music.  Also, many artists like Bon Jovi, Michael Buble, Katy Perry, Josh Groban, James Taylor and more have recorded your holiday favorites so mixing them in would be ideal.

Setting The Scene.

Scented candles inject “all that’s holiday” in the air as well as holiday touches such as silver, gold and white shimmery ball ornaments. You can use these ornaments in a centerpiece mixed with flowers or on your tabletops in clusters.  Votives are a nice, easy and inexpensive way to decorate. You can cluster frosted votives and place “snow” at the base of the votives, which delivers texture to your tabletop. Also, tall Manzanita branches that are flocked are quite dramatic and easy to place in a cylindrical vase.

Serving specialty holiday cocktails such as these are sure to get your guests in the holiday spirit:

Eggnog and Kahlua

Ingredients
1 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
4 oz eggnog
Nutmeg
Mix Kahlua with eggnog in a wine glass and then sprinkle nutmeg on top.

Peppermint Martini

5 ounces of Chopin vodka
2 ounces of white Creme de Menthe
1/2 ounce of Peppermint Schnapps
Mini candy canes

Pour all of your liquid ingredients into a shaker 1/2 full of cracked ice. Give a good 20 vigorous shakes and let the shaker rest for half a minute. Strain your lucious peppermint martini into 2 freezing martini glasses. Add a candy cane in each glass for garnish.

Delectable Hanukkah Fare?

Invite your friends and family to celebrate Hanukkah with you by hosting a Latke Vodka party. Trays pass your favorite latkes with different chilled vodkas. Put a spin on your latkes; sweet potato, zucchini, butternut squash and sage latkes are memorable.

Sweet Potato Latkes
1 lb sweet potatoes, peeled and coarsely grated
2 scallions, finely chopped
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
3/4 cup vegetable oil

Stir together potatoes, scallions, flour, eggs, salt, and pepper. Heat oil in a deep 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches of 4, spoon 1/8 cup potato mixture per latke into oil and flatten to 3-inch diameter with a slotted spatula. Reduce heat to moderate and cook until golden, about 1 1/2 minutes on each side. Transfer latkes with spatula to paper towels to drain.

Entertaining Children?

For a Hanukkah Party, you can have kids decorate their own dreidels and do a gelt hunt.

For a Christmas Party, organize a candy cane hunt and have children make their own Christmas tree ornaments.  Nobody will leave empty handed.

For winter climates, you can build your own snowman with all of the fixings: sticks for arms, buttons and carrots for fun features.

Not snowing in Los Angeles?  Bring in real or faux snow to add winter fun to your holiday party.
