Festive Easter Cocktails

Throwing an Easter party? While the kids are away (hunting eggs perhaps?) the adults will play.

Here are some of our favorite Easter themed cocktails, perfect for the holiday.

  1. The Blue Cottontail:

Here’s a bright and springy drink that will leave your guests begging for the recipe.

Ingredients Per Cocktail:

1-1/2 ounces vodka

½ ounce triple sec

¼ ounce blue Curacao

Flamed orange peel (for garnish)

Preparation:

Shake all ingredients well, serve chilled with the flamed orange peel over the glass.

      2. Pink Bonnet:

This drink not only includes an egg white in honor of the Easter spirit but also is pastel pink and perfect.

Ingredients Per Cocktail:

1-1/2 ounces gin

½ ounce simple syrup

¾ ounce lemon juice

2 dashes of crème de framboise or grenadine (this give it the beautiful color)

White of a small egg (you can use a pasteurized egg or two tablespoons of egg white substitute- the egg attributes to the cloudy coloring)

Preparation:

Shake all ingredients before adding ice to break up the egg white and create the cloudy color of the drink. Add ice and shake again. Serve with mint leaves if desired.

        3. The White Chocolate Easter-tini:

Ingredients Per Cocktail:

1 ounce vanilla vodka

1 ounce cream

1 ounce white chocolate liqueur

Jellybeans

JP Girls take on Chicago!!

Chicago, maybe better known as “The Windy City,” is an amazing combination of business and tourism. The city is known for many attractions such the Navy Pier, it’s beautiful parks, sports teams, and popular cuisine. An incredible city to live or to visit, the JP girls considered their recent and brief time in Chicago, a once-in-a-lifetime experience sharing it with their mothers! Below are some of their highlights and recommendations!

The first night, the dynamic foursome dined like Queens at famed Chef, Art Smiths’ amazing restaurant, Table Fifty-Two. Chef de Cuisine, Rey Villalobos, pulled out every stop! Some of their favorites were the goat cheese biscuits (recipe included at the end of article), grits with shrimp, short rib, and decadent desserts.  Just when they thought there was possibly no more room for anything else…it was all topped off with Chef Smith’s famed Hummingbird Cake for Jodi’s birthday!!

The next day was filled with even more adventures. Attending an Oprah taping which will air this Friday, April 15th was a true crowning moment! The show highlights the Oprah Show’s biggest bloopers; you can tune in on Friday to check out to see what the audience voted as the show’s funniest laugh out loud (LOL) moment. Want to go to an Oprah taping? Check out her website for details on how to be entered in the lottery.

http://www.oprah.com/oprah_tickets.html

**With over 10,000 ticket inquiries per week, and only 300 seats in the audience per show, the JP gang was thrilled to be a part of show number 30 as the countdown begins for the last 30 shows for forever!

After the show, the JP girls and their moms grabbed drinks at RLs- Ralph Lauren’s ONLY domestic restaurant and bar.  Lucky enough to score a table in the cozy bar, their bartender Russell was truly memorable as he shared his 2 past appearances on the Oprah show!  Having drinks at the bar was Loretta Divine, “Adele” from Grey’s Anatomy and another male actor, which nobody could name him for the life of them! This ‘hotspot’ is definitely one you are not going to want to miss next time you visit Chicago.

And if you thought the girls getaway trip couldn’t get any better you were wrong! That night the JP group dined at Alinea, which was a truly insane experience. Alinea opened in May of 2005 and is owned by Chef Grant Achatz (who just opened ‘Next’ the night before they dined at Alinea). Alinea, ranked No. 7 on the list of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year, is 25 places ahead of the French Laundry, whose chef, Thomas Keller, served as Achatz's mentor for years. Achatz has won four James Beard Foundation Awards, the latest in 2008 for the country's outstanding chef.  Alinea is a three star Michelin restaurant, a very prestigious honor. Three star ratings are extremely rare; there are only 81 in the entire world with 26 in France alone. What makes this restaurant stand above the rest is its emphasis on molecular gastronomy, or progressive cuisine.

With a reservation list over three months, and a team of people to turn away reservation seekers, the JP girls got in due to a last minute cancellation and seized the opportunity for the magnificent twenty-two course dinner. All their food was prepared with such delicacy, imagination, and innovation, some of which was masterminded in front of each diner. One of the many highlights was the DIY ravioli, which was filled by the waiter spooning piping hot short rib pieces as each gal added their own interesting accouterments creating a delish pocket of heaven!

Who doesn’t love a good dessert?

Sarah claimed the dessert was the most memorable part of the entire dinner. At the conclusion of the meal, the wait staff rolled out a rubbery tabletop to cover their entire table as two dessert chefs proceeded to design the dessert in front of their eyes. The spectacle was gorgeous and awe inspiring.

A component was the chefs pouring a liquid into glass cylinders that sat atop the tabletop—the table served as the bottom of the cylinders. After finishing the dessert presentation, the chefs/artists lifted the glasses to reveal that the liquid had hardened into little crème brulee pillows (pictured below), which the tops were finished by a blowtorch.  The ladies dove into the dessert, scooping each and every delectable bite off the rubbery mat!

The restaurant explained that it would be a 3-hour dining experience which in actuality was a 5+ hour extravaganza. A profoundly, memorable, 5 star dining experience which has been accounted and defined as a culinary musical, topped off the once-in-a-lifetime Chicago trip the JP girls will always cherish, sharing the special few days with their always supportive mothers.

Want to make the famous Art Smith’s biscuits? Here’s the recipe!

Ingredients:

2 cups self-rising flour

1 teaspoon salt

4 tablespoons (2 ounces) cold butter

4 tablespoons (2 ounces) goat cheese

1 cup (8 ounces) buttermilk

Extra butter to grease pan and top biscuits

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 425°. Place one 10-inch cast iron pan into the oven while it is preheating. Place flour and salt into a medium-sized bowl. Cut in the butter and goat cheese. Make a well in the middle of the ingredients and pour in the milk. Stir until the mix is moistened, adding an extra tablespoon of milk if needed.

Remove the hot skillet from the oven and place a tablespoon of butter into it. When the butter has melted, drop 1/4 cupfuls of batter into the pan, (use a muffin scoop to drop the batter if you have one). Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter. Bake from 14–16 minutes until browned on the top and bottom. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Enjoy warm!

Before You Can 'Say Yes to the Dress'

We’ve all been there: The search for the perfect something, the over paying for that item, and the buyer’s regret and worry that there was something else better out there. In regards to your wedding dress, this article will help you find the right dress and hopefully get rid of any buyer’s regret.

First off, according to most wedding advice sites, your wedding gown should be no more than about 8-10% of your entire wedding budget. This will obviously fluctuate depending on what aspects of your wedding are most important to you, but it is important to allocate a set amount for your dress and stick to it.

Start early! If you are engaged or have marriage on the mind, chances are you’ve seen Say Yes to the Dress on TLC and know how most gowns are not ready to wear when purchased. Most dresses are custom made, with many alterations done after purchase. Whether you plan on adding your own flare or just making sure it fits perfectly, keep in mind your wedding timeline!

Next, where do you look? Two words: brainstorm and research. It is important to brainstorm what kind of look you are going for. Do you want to look classy or sexy? Maybe walk the line of both? White too boring for you? Maybe you want a splash of color. Nowadays many brides are opting out of the traditional white dress and are choosing colors that better represent their personalities.

There is a really helpful iPhone dress finder app that you can download at theknot.com called “Wedding Dress Look Book.” You can input your bra size, height and weight, best features and problem areas. It will find just-for-you dresses to help get the ball rolling. This is also helpful for browsing designers you like. Dress shopping is all about narrowing the choices to prevent feeling overwhelmed.

After you have a dress type in mind and how you want to feel and look in your dress, research places that are in your price range. Don’t torture yourself by going to stores that obviously will have beautiful royal princess gowns if you know you cannot afford them. Pick only a handful of stores you want to start with and make at least an hour appointment at each.

Now, the dilemma of who comes with you. Try to limit yourself to just two or three others. We all have that one friend, who we love dearly but with whom we do not share the same taste in clothes. Yeah, don’t bring that friend. Always keep in mind that this is your wedding and what matters most is how you feel in your dress. It’s helpful to have friends to help you narrow down choices, but don’t be afraid to go on your own to pick the final one.

Tables That Give Thanks

Family members, check. Turkey ordered, check. Menu planned, check. Table décor…next!  With Thanksgiving tomorrow, it might seem impossible to put together a warm, inventive holiday tablescape for your home.  Here are a few of our easy, yet beautiful ideas, for decorating your Thanksgiving table that you can create quickly!

MODERN TABLE:

*Use clear glass hurricanes and dress them with leaves or elements of nature. Keep china simple and napkins and tablecloths in light autumn colors or white/ivory so your fall elements pop!

TRADITIONAL TABLE

*Use the jewel tones associated with this time of year to add depth and warmth to your table.  Display inexpensive berries and leave (which can be found outdoors or at craft stores) in family heirlooms such as sugar bowls, water pitchers, or small vases.  Use rich, dark napkins and white candles to complete the look.

KID’S TABLE

*Create a fun kid’s table using a smaller table and covering it with craft paper (found at any craft store).  Put tins of crayons on the table for doodling.  Add whatever whimsical elements you want (pictured: yarn balls, swizzle sticks with paper flags) to create a colorful and entertaining place for kids to celebrate and be entertained.

PEAR TABLE CARDS

*It’s nice to have designated areas for your guests to sit.  Create these simple and edible place cards. Instructions: Use one medium sized pair, cut a 2”x3” piece of construction paper and write guests name in gold hued pen.  Use balled gold pin or tack (found at any craft store) to attach card to the pear.

NATURAL CENTERPIECE

*Use seasonal items found at your local grocery store such as gourds, pumpkins, squashes and chestnuts (even oranges or tangerines will work) and place them in interesting bowls down the center of your table.  This takes less then 10 minutes and creates a lovely cornucopia style feeling to your feast.

GIVING THANKS

Silverbox has designed a fun and creative way to share your thanks with your guests.  Their Thanksgiving printable strips have a place on the back where guests can write what they are thankful for.

You can print them on kraft paper to make a paper chain (a fun activity to do with kids) or use them as napkin rings at each place setting.  Click below for template and instructions:

However you decide to decorate and celebrate we wish you a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving!
